The Originals’ Star Daniel Gillies (Elijah), 41, is set to visit refugee settlements in Uganda after being shook by the hunger crisis in East Africa and the civil war in the South Sudan which has resulted in the external displacement of more than two million people
Elijah will travel with Oxfam to visit these refugee settlements in Uganda and shine a light on the massive ongoing tragedy and create as much conversation as possible about what’s happening and how people are surviving day to day.
“I started reading about the civil war in South Sudan several months ago. This is now Africa’s largest refugee crisis — almost four million people have been forced from their homes and just less than half of that are now refugees in neighboring countries. Many are heading to Uganda, which is one of the reasons why I wanted to go there”
Elijah will ‘specifically’ visit Bidi Bidi camp, the world’s largest refugee camp; it hosts at least 270,000 refugees – more than any other place in the world. It was closed to new arrivals in December last to prevent overcrowding. Since then, new settlements have opened roughly every two months.
Filippo Grandi, the UN’s high commissioner for refugees, says Uganda is now “at breaking point” due to unprecedented mass influx of refugees, something that has strained public services and local infrastructure
