2016 is the year of underdogs. Uganda Cranes qualification to AFCON, Portugal lifting EURO, Leicester lifting EPL, Onduparaka…football had its fair share of heroics just as the political world registered Donald John Trump’s remarkable feat against Hillary Clinton. Ugandan hip-hop too has its first ever awards! Cheers for that!
There is no doubt these awards will have its fair share of shocks too! Chief self-appointed “critics, thinkers or ba-purists” better vote for your favourite rappers otherwise I foresee lots of you upgrading your complaining bundles to 4G. Nevertheless, there will be shocks. Here are some of those I foresee.
1. ALBUM OF THE YEAR: Street Identity By Shemy B
Pitted against Navio, Pryce Teeba, Ajo, and Nellysade Saint, there is no doubt that Shemy B’s Street Identity and Ajo’s No apologies are dining are the highest table. Both rappers have had their debut albums nominated for the top prize. Shemy B hold quite an advantage and could pull a major Trump moment.
2. MALE RAPPER OF THE YEAR: Pryce Teeba
This Ntinda lad has had a massive year in all aspects. From releasing probably the biggest banger and ushered in a new wave of energy, Lord Major Pryce Teeba might bag this award. This is not to deny the massive works by other nominees in this category.
3. FEMALE RAPPER OF THE YEAR: Cleo The Sphynx
Dont say you were not informed of the upcoming shocks. Elections is about numbers and when it comes to figures, Cleo has it-somewhat naturally. I mean, when she walks on the internet streets, she attracts a huge following. She has a magnetic personality that would make Sevo vote for Besigye. She is authoritative and has a flock of a following. She leads them like a good shepherd as she preaches peace, unity, forgiveness and cake art. With her new sermon of voting, her flock is not only loading airtime but also voting. I wont be surprised if she bags the award.
4. SWEET 16 OF THE YEAR: Payne Keelah
Grown in the rap game and earned his credit as a battle rapper, Payne Keelah is about to cause pain to fans of nominees in this category. The raw, street drenched rapper has quite a following of ninjas in dirty sneakers and baggy shorts who will ready give up their rolex for a casting him those precious votes.
5. MEDIA PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR: Salim Segawa
Not a rapper, Salim Segawa is pitted against heavy weights: Mr Dj of Radiocity, So Severe, Byg Kahuna and Kyle Duncan of The New Vision. This star-studded list is not something new to Salim. The passionate writer who believed in Ug Hiphop way before many of y’all started off with a wordpress blog before writing for Bigeye.ug then founding this website. Over this time, Salim devoted his work to hosting rappers on podcasts, reviewing their works, uploading their music,et al. However, other nominees too have had their share of contribution to the rap game but Salim is the ladies’ man in this category. This lanky- Somali-like writer’s number is said to be on a speed dial of many pencil thin light-skinned city chics with bright smiles.
